General information about Acorus gramineus (Sweet Flag):
Bright variegated blades of grass-like evergreen foliage adorn Acorus, commonly called Sweet Flag. Gardeners love Sweet Flag for more than just her color - the foliage, when crushed, emits a splendid fragrance too.

These moisture loving perennials are a splendid groundcover for water features and even lightly shaded areas. This plant will slowly naturalize by spreading rhizomes making it ideal for contained areas where you want sunny color and full coverage.

With its fine-bladed rush-like leaves (12-18 inch by 1/8 to 1/4 inch) that remain evergreen in southern zones, this non-invasive grass requires consistently moist soil and will insist on not being left to dry out between watering. As such, gardeners flock to Acorus because she is perfectly suited to bogs, pond and stream edges, and water gardens offering luscious, low-maintenance, fragrant foliage.

Numerous sedge-like spikes of tiny, densely-packed, lemony flowers appear in late spring to early summer offering yet another texture and tone to the garden. Later, the flowers give way to rich ruby berries making giving your garden area constant variety, texture and color.

From a functionality standpoint, Sweet Flag is excellent for erosion control along the banks of streams and ponds or applied in mass as a groundcover creating a sea of constant color. With a slow to moderate growth rate and willingness to tolerate occasional foot traffic, Sweet Flag is nicely grown in containers or as an edging.

Provided adequate water is maintained, Acorus is a bright border, landscape accent, or rock garden companion plant. Simply put, given the vivid gold and green foliage followed by flowers and berries, this Sweet Flag will give constant color and interest to any garden.

Interesting Facts
In the Middle Ages, fine-cut leaves used to be strewn across the floor both for the scent and for presumed efficacy against pests.

In cooking, the dried rhizomes can be substituted for cinnamon and nutmeg.

Gardener Tips
We love pairing Sweet Flag with Siberian Iris and Astilbe. The combination of various foliage textures, luxurious fragrance and velvet and fluffy plumed blossoms creates the loveliest garden sight.

Consider creating a trio of Sweet Flag, daylilies, and Coreopsis for a rich display of color, foliage texture and varied bloom times all season.

Care
Requires consistently moist soil, do not let it dry out between waterings.
Because these are grass-like evergreen perennials, they do not actually go dormant. It is best to divide them only in spring, allowing their root systems sufficient recovery time to survive the following winter.
This plant can be susceptible to Anthracnose, especially in southern zones. If it develops brown spots in winter, cut the foliage back (to the ground is OK) in early spring.
