Mazus reptans
Example of approximately what these plants look like when shipped. See the eighth photograph of any plant to see a photo of what it looks like when shipped.Mazus reptans is one of the most beautiful ground-hugging perennials we offer. Her profuse orchid-like blossoms blanket the bed like a swarm of butterflies in springtime.
She's wonderful used between steps, pavers, and stones where she'll tolerate light foot traffic and even benefit from an occasional mowing. Resistant to deer and evergreen (in southern zones), her bright, twisting foliage looks like a velvety green shag carpet when allowed to creep along to cover an area.

General information about Mazus reptans: With lovely blooms that dance like butterflies above her foliage in spring time, Mazus is a crowd pleaser for sure! Featuring semi-evergreen, herbaceous, bright green, twisty foliage with an oval shape that grows up to 2 inches in length, Mazus is prized for her adaptability. It creeps to form a continuous mat that performs beautifully as a border, between stones (Yes! She’ll tolerate light foot traffic), between pavers, or in rock gardens. She is also perfect if deer are an issue as she tends to be resistant. Because Mazus is moderate to fast spreading, and it roots as it spreads, you’ll find that in just a few growing seasons, your garden will be resplendent with her springtime dance. Consider planting Mazus reptans over bulb flowers or lilies where she will offer shade for their root systems without interfering with their growth as well as a lovely pop of color when they aren’t blooming and she is. Pairing plants with different bloom times is a wonderful way to achieve constant color. Easy to manage and low-maintenance, you’ll want to consider planting Mazus in mass as the more you have of these lovely plants, the more alive and vibrant your garden will be. Mazus reptans will tolerate and benefit from an occasional light mowing on a high setting. |
Care
If using between pavers or stepping stones, it is recommended that you plant them such that the soil level is one to one-and-a-half inches below the top of the walking surface to allow room for the plants to compress when stepped on. Mulch is recommended to protect during winter in northern zones. Mazus likes good moisture but not wet feet. If you ever get areas where some of it starts dying off, make sure the areas dying off are not staying too wet or too dry. If the area has been too wet, spray a fungicide after the area dries out. Otherwise, if the area is too dry, water a bit more after removing any dead plants. If it is not obvious what is causing some to die, the best option is to have a sample tested.

Shipping
If you are more than a one-day ship away, we do not recommend shipping this plant during the heat of summer (July-August).
